Backyard Farming, Homesteading Workshop Set for July 25 in Georgetown

Program designed to introduce homeowners to backyard farming

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, in partnership with Lone Star Ag Credit, will be hosting the “You Can Farm” backyard farming and homesteading workshop on July 25 at the AgriLife Extension office in Williamson County, 100 Wilco Way, Georgetown.

The workshop will be from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. with check-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $30, and registration can be done online at https://tx.ag/YouCanFarm or by calling the AgriLife Extension office at 512-943-3300.

There will be refreshments and a drawing. Lunch will be provided.

The workshop is designed to help introduce basic homesteading practices. During the program, presenters will introduce people to the basics of backyard gardening and homesteading and will be sharing funding options and ideas on marketing products.

Workshop topics

There will be a variety of topics on backyard farming and homesteading covered during the workshop, including the following:

Keeping Backyard Poultry and Egg Production Basics
Intro into Beekeeping
Starting a Raised-Bed Garden
Exploring Steps for Obtaining a Micro Loan
Land Loan Options for Your Piece of Texas

Participants will also learn how to use social media to reach new markets with their products and learn how to gain knowledge on improving brand awareness in the surrounding communities where they live.

Master Gardener sessions offer flower knowledge, Governor’s Mansion tour

Save seeds or participate in a seed-swap with other gardeners to grow a larger variety of flowers than what’s sold at the local garden center. These perennial flowers bloom from spring to fall.

These beautiful flowers are a favorite in large cut-flower bouquets. They symbolize adoration, loyalty, and longevity.

The upcoming 12-week fall training of University of Missouri Extension Master Gardeners offers a chance to learn more about flowers while touring local gardens and the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City.

The 12-week training program is from Aug. 17-Nov. 16.

The sessions are a mix of in-person and online classes. The online sessions take place over Zoom from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

According to a MU Extension release, the in-person schedule is:

Thursday, Aug. 17, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Orientation at the MU Extension Center in Cole County, Jefferson City.

Tuesday, Sept. 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tour around Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City to look at different types of flowers. The mansion’s gardens include a sunken pool, walkways and a pergola in addition to vegetables to fruits, which are included in menus for mansion events.

Saturday, Sept. 16, 10 a.m.-noon. Fruit and Veggie Garden Tour, 719 W. Broadway, Columbia (rain date: Saturday, Sept. 23).

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 5:30-7 p.m. Neighborhood landscape tour in Columbia. The exact location will be provided before the tour.

Thursday, Oct. 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Session on lawn management and soil management in the garden, MU Extension Center in Cole County, Jefferson City.

Thursday, Nov.16, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Cedar City Room, 810 Sandstone, Jefferson City. Session on plant propagation and integrated pest management/plant diagnostics.

“The Extension Master Gardener Training helps you gain new horticulture knowledge and become a community resource for science-based information,” MU Extension horticulturist Dhruba Dhakal said in a release. “It also helps to educate adults and children about the gardening benefits and meet fellow gardeners.”

The cost of the program is $200.
