The homesteading movement has a wide range of activities, ideologies and motivations but at its core is a desire for self-sufficiency. It’s a great way to get your family working together during the day and then sit down to enjoy meals made with produce that you’ve grown yourself.
STEUBENVILLE — The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has announced the following programs and activities throughout the month of May:

Children: Paint a nature scene using watercolors at 3 p.m. May 19. Supplies will be provided. Registration is required.
Adults: Oskar Schindler will be portrayed by Ken Hammontree at 1:30 p.m. May 20. Learn about Schindler, who was a German industrialist, spy and member of the Nazi party. He is credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust. Registration for event is required.
An Urban Homesteading and Gardening program will take place at 11 a.m. May 20.
Shawn and Beth Dougherty will discuss the basics of garden maintenance and topics will include: weeding, mulching, watering, suckering and plant health. Registration is required.

Adults: Unwind at the library and color pages designed for adults at 5 p.m. Monday. Supplies will be provided.

Teens: Paint a rock to like outer space at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Children in grades kindergarden through sixth grade: Stop in to engage with pattern blocks and logic puzzles at 6 p.m. May 18.

Adults: The book club’s annual tea party will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday. This month, discussion is, “A Dark and Stormy Tea,” by Laura Childs. Take a tea cup and join the club.

Adults: Are you a writer or want to be? Writing exercises and the opportunity to share ideas and inspirations will be available to take part in at 6 p.m. Monday. Coffee and snacks will be served. Registration is required.
Think spelling bees are just for schools? Think again. There will be a spelling bee competition for adults at 4 p.m. May 18. Registration is required.
Teens: Make a pin anytime from 5:30 p.m. To 7 p.m. May 17. Pins will be made with a positive message and to remind teens that they are doing a great job every day.
