A team of researchers from the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development, Banaras Hindu University, recently organized a program of farmers training and awareness at Chhittupur village in Kashi Vidyapith block for the production of organic leafy vegetables through kitchen gardening and vertical farming.
The team, led by an assistant professor at IESD, Jay Prakash Verma, has developed very effective bio-fertilizers and bio-decomposer for crop productivity. The bio-fertilizers help enhance plant growth and are alternatives to chemical fertilizers, said Verma, adding that the bio-decomposer helps organic matter decomposition to convert compost for direct application to mix with soil for increasing the nutritional content of soils.
