From Hollywood to Homesteading: Bug Hall’s Radical Lifestyle Shift
One might remember Bug Hall from the iconic 1994 film ‘The Little Rascals’ or ‘The Big Green’. The former Hollywood actor, born on February 4, 1985, in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, had a successful career in the entertainment industry. However, Hall’s life took a radical turn when he retired from acting, converting to Catholicism, and embraced an entirely different lifestyle.
A Leap of Faith
Having left the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Hall now lives as a ‘Catholic medieval homesteader’ on a 60-acre farm in Michigan. Along with his wife, Jill DeGroff, whom he married on February 11, 2017, and their four children, Hall took a vow of poverty. The family has committed to a life of intentional poverty, farming the land, and raising cows and chickens.
Spiritual Practices and Farming
More than just a life of physical labor, the family’s routine includes daily spiritual practices. These rituals range from praying the Angelus, the Divine Office, and the Rosary, to attending daily Mass and adoration. They even maintain a home altar, and Hall personally prays 15 decades of the rosary each day.
From Fame to Faith-Driven Simplicity
Surprisingly, their farm produces six times more food than the family consumes. The surplus, estimated at around $40,000 to $60,000 worth in the first year, is donated to Hall’s local parish and community. In return, they receive donations, creating a beautiful cycle of giving and receiving. Bug Hall, once a successful actor, now finds joy in a life of faith-driven simplicity and service, attributing his inspiration to Saint Francis. In his words, the appeal of not having an income that can be taken away is irreplaceable.
Hall’s remarkable transition from fame to faith, from a life of plenty to one of intentional scarcity, highlights the profound transformations that can occur when one dares to step off the beaten path and follow their heart.
