TINTON FALLS – Since his teens, Colts Neck native Jack Lind logged many years of experience working in the landscaping and garden business. And in 2019, he fulfilled his entrepreneurial dream by launching Jersey Shore Custom Gardens, a Tinton Falls-based business dedicated to designing and constructing high-quality gardens that bring homeowners’ visions to life.
Growing up, “my best friend’s mother had a garden business and I started working for him and his mom helping to build gardens and plant vegetables when I was 16,” recalled Lind, 28, a Tinton Falls resident.
Though he attended Brookdale Community College in the Lincroft section of Middletown after high school, “college wasn’t my thing and I left after a year and went to work for a couple of different landscape companies, then cut grass and did landscaping jobs on my own and continued to help my friend’s mother in her garden business,” Lind said.

Lind launched Jersey Shore Custom Gardens in 2019 with a particular focus on vegetable garden design, installation and maintenance. “I’ll design the garden, construct it and build a fence around it if requested and I specialize in vegetable gardens, but they can also just feature plants and flowers,” he said.

But while the seasonality of his business might appear to present another wrinkle, Lind said that it doesn’t have to.
“Most people only think about gardens during the warmer-weather months, but I can build and plant later in the year too,” he said. “Our busy season is from March to late summer, but we can work into the fall and winter months as long as the ground isn’t frozen, and if homeowners build or prepare their garden in the fall and winter, they’ll be ready to go in the spring. There’s never a bad time to build or set up the garden, and it’s smart for homeowners to do it before the busy season starts and they lose valuable growing time.”

‘Gardens are relaxing and therapeutic’
With support from several team members, “we’ve done hundreds of jobs over the years and are selling more every day,” said Lind, who spends his time working with customers, creating garden designs, picking up soil and other materials from landscape yards and overseeing all jobs. “No other providers in the area do exactly what I do and our work speaks for itself.”
Looking ahead, “I hope to get more involved in sprinkler and irrigation systems for our gardens, which our clients currently outsource from other companies,” Lind said.
An avid gardener himself, “I enjoy going into my own raised beds at the end of the day, picking cherry tomatoes and eating them right out of the garden,” he said. “Gardens are relaxing and therapeutic; it’s great to unwind after the day and go into the garden. Some people put lights around their garden fence and tables in there for coffee; it’s a beautiful outdoor living space that gets you closer to your food and where it comes from, and you’ll learn a lot from watching your garden grow.”
