The flower section of the plant nursery can be a little overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be.
For spring, try tulips and daffodils with their bright colors. Or choose the cheerful daisy-like flowers of asters. These plants grow in most regions and attract pollinators.
Ann Elizabeth Slocomb Merrill, of Skaneateles, died Monday.
Born in 1931, she graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in home economics, according to her obituary. She worked in the food industry at SU for a few years became a home economics teacher in Syracuse schools.
Her obituary said her true passion was horticulture and gardening.
“Ann was a master gardener and master flower show judge, always teaching in her sweet and quiet way her knowledge of floral arrangements according to the rules of judging,” the obituary said.
She exhibited and judged across New York state for more than 50 years, including at the New York State Fair, according to her obituary. When looking for her at home, friends and family knew to look first in her garden!
She is an honorary member of the Onondaga Garden Club and a life member and past president of the Skaneateles Garden Club, according to her obituary.
Services will be at a later date. Donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or the Skaneateles Garden Club, P.O. Box 96. Skaneateles, NY 13152.
