Sunday Gardener: Tips for putting together a seasonal flower arrangement
GARDENER. I’M METEOROLOGIST AVA MARIE HERE WITH CARRIE ENGLE. HELLO. HEY, WE’RE HERE WITH AT VALLEY VIEW FARMS AND WE’RE ADDING SOME COLOR FOR THE FALL. SO YOU’RE KIND OF DECORATING A POT HERE THAT CAN ADD A LOT OF COLOR. I DO. YEAH. THIS HAD A PATIENCE IN IT EARLIER. PULLED THOSE OUT BECAUSE THEY WERE KIND OF LOOKING NOT SO GOOD THIS TIME OF YEAR. YOU’RE LOOKING. EXACTLY. SO TIME TO PUT IN SOME FALL COLOR. SO, OF COURSE, THE MOM IS KIND OF THE QUEEN OF THE FALL FLOWERING FAVORITES, AS I LIKE TO CALL THEM. SO WE’LL LOOSEN THESE ROOTS JUST A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE IT’S PRETTY ROOT BOUND AND THAT’S GOING TO HELP IT KIND OF SPREAD OUT. AND I’M JUST GOING TO SET THAT IN THERE FOR NOW BECAUSE THIS IS REALLY TIGHT. WE’RE GOING TO TRY TO FIT SOME OTHER PLANTS IN THERE. IT’S LIKE THAT ALONE COULD LOOK AMAZING, BUT YOU CAN ADD SOME DIFFERENT DIMENSION. YEAH, YEAH. SO I LOVE ADDING THE GRASSES. THIS IS ONE OF THE GRASSES THAT GIVES YOU SOME NICE HEIGHT AND EVERYTHING IN THERE. AND THEN WE’LL PUT SOME BABY CABBAGE IN THE FRONT THERE. OH YEAH. THIS IS LIKE A WHAT KIND OF CABBAGE IS THIS? NOT ONE. YOU CALL IT ORNAMENTAL CABBAGE. YEAH, ORNAMENTAL CABBAGE AND KALE. AND THEN PANSIES ARE ALWAYS GREAT FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR, TOO. OKAY, INTERESTING. YEAH. WE’RE PRETENDING THERE’S ROOM IN HERE, BUT IT WORKS. IT WORKS. SO YOU CAN DO THIS. IT’S JUST REALLY DEPENDS. SO MAYBE SET A DIFFERENT COLOR ON THE OTHER SIDE. IT’S REALLY HOWEVER YOU FEEL LIKE PUTTING IT IS. I MEAN, YOU CAN REALLY DO A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS. YOU CAN USE MOMS, YOU CAN USE ASTERS, YOU CAN USE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GRASSES. LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. YEAH, JUST ALL KINDS OF STUFF. AND OF COURSE, THE COLOR, YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO GO WITH PURPLE FOR THE RAVENS. GO WITH IT. IF YOU WANT YELLOW BECAUSE YOU WANT TO SEE IT FROM THE ROAD, GO WITH THAT. SO ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO KIND OF DECIDE HOW TO PLANT UP YOUR POT. YEAH. AND I ALWAYS LOVE YOUR IDEA OF ADDING SOME DIMENSION. SO YOU’VE GOT THE SPILLER, THE THRILLER, THE FILLER. I DON’T KNOW. I’M TRYING TO THINK WHICH. WHICH IS WHICH HERE? THRILLER FILLER. SPILLER. SO THAT WORKS OUT GREAT. YEAH. OKAY. NEAT. AND THEN HOW LONG SHOULD THESE MOMS REALLY STAY IN? MOMS WILL PROBABLY LAST 6 TO 8 WEEKS, AND IT DEPENDS ON YOUR TOLERANCE. SO THEY CAN GET KIND OF BROWN AND ICKY, BUT IF YOU’RE LOOKING FROM A DISTANCE, THEY’RE FINE. BUT YOU COULD PULL THAT OUT. YOU COULD PROBABLY ADD A COUPLE MORE PANSIES IN THERE AND HAVE THIS GO MOST OF THE WINTER. YEAH, UNTIL THE WHOLE POT FREEZES. SAID SOMETIMES IF YOU TAKE THE MOM OUT AND PLANT IT IN THE GROUND, IT MIGHT OVERWINTER, IT MIGHT TRIED IT, IT DIDN’T WORK. BUT I’M GOING TO TRY IT AGAIN THIS YEAR BECAUSE ONCE IT’S IN THE GROUND, IT STAYS A LITTLE WARMER WITH THE ROOTS. YEAH, IT HAS. IT’S A MUCH MORE INSULATED. THE OTHER THING IS, REMEMBER TO WATER IT WHEN YOU DO PLANT IT. SO WE ALL FORGET ABOUT DO THAT KIND OF IN THE FALL. FAIR ENOUGH. YEAH. OKAY. NEAT. WELL, I’M LOVING THE DIMENSION OF THIS. AND LIKE YOU SAID, IT’S ADDING A LOT OF BEAUTIFUL COLOR FOR THE FALL. YEAH, WELL, THANKS FOR THE TIPS HERE ON SUNDAY. ALL RIGHTY. THANK YOU.
