JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The Shady Oaks Garden Club and Fischman Gallery will host a free standard flower show in early August as a way for community members to engage with nature and the arts.
The free flower show will take place at the Fischman Gallery from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 11.
The show, titled “Viewpoints,” will include a wide range of floral and botanical exhibits including 24 creative floral designs, 12 botanical arts craft exhibits, over 100 flowering and non-blooming plants and two educational exhibits. According to organizers, the flower show will conform to “strict standards established by the National Garden Clubs, Inc., with certified judges awarding blue, red, yellow and honorable mention ribbons in each class or subclass.”
Exhibit judging will take place before the show is made open to the public so that visitors can see which displays won awards.
All of the show’s elements have been created or grown by the members of the Shady Oaks Garden Club and will feature unique artistic perspectives. This flower show is also an opportunity for the community to view Fischman Gallery’s August art exhibit which will highlight the works of artists Nancy Jane Earnest and Janice Snapp.
Shady Oaks Garden Club was organized in 1958 and joined the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., the following year. The club has received many state and national awards for its flower shows and other projects — twice winning the Kitty Anderson Flower Show Award for the Best Standard Flower Show in the state of Tennessee.
The Fischman Gallery is located at 133 N. Commerce St. in downtown Johnson City and is a handicapped-accessible venue. The gallery’s regular hours can be found on its Facebook page.
