ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – When most of us think of farming and crops, we imagine a place somewhere deep in the countryside. But there’s farming happening everywhere, even in the city.
It’s called urban homesteading and there are several of them in our community.
Ben Rislow grew up on farm and wanted to continue his family’s work.
So, when his family moved to Southeast Rochester four years ago, they built an urban homestead. It’s filled with vegetables, plants and even bees and chickens.
All of the food produced on his land is used to feed his family. He says that in the summer the majority of the vegetables they eat are from the garden.
“When we moved to Rochester for my wife’s job, we knew we wanted a bigger yard because we had bigger visions for our garden. We like to think it’s a kind of cathedral-themed fence to kind of capture a sense of sanctuary calmness that you get in a real cathedral,” he said.
This summer Rislow is adding an orchard in a plot of land next to the garden hoping to grow some apples, pears and berries.
