A Fall Family Flower Festival will be held 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4 at the Harvest Garden inside Henderson County Regional Fairpark Complex, 3356 TX 31 Bus. in Athens.
Hosted by the Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA), it will be a day of fun-filled activities for the entire family. Bringing a camp chair is suggested as seating will be limited. Admission and activities are free and open to the public.
Two presentations will be given by certified Master Gardeners. Judy Haldeman will present “Wildflowers.” She will explain which wildflowers will grow well in East Texas, when to plant, how to plant, and will give tips on successfully growing wildflowers, whether you wish to grow them in a small space or have an entire meadow full.
Andie Rathbone will present “Fall Color in Your Garden.” Just because your summer-blooming flowers may be going dormant does not mean the color in your landscape should dwindle. She will reveal which which fall-blooming plants do well in East Texas and give tips for growing them so you can have a stunning display in one of East Texas’ most beautiful seasons.
In addition to the presentations, other activities will be offered. A bounce house and face painting will be available for children to enjoy. Adults as well as children can take an origami workshop. And food trucks will be on hand if you wish to stay all day. Six Forks Farm will offer brick oven pizza and 20 flavors of Italian ice will be available from Gelu.
To help keep your garden beautiful all winter, Master Gardeners will be selling flats of mixed-colored pansies. They will be available on site and $25 will buy a flat of 18. Pansies are cold tolerant, so they live all winter long in East Texas. They can freeze and thaw without any noticeable damage. Both ‘Colossus’ and ‘Delta’ mixes will be available. Colossus is a large hybrid pansy with contrasting colors that form their famous “face.” The colors of Delta pansy petals are either entirely solid or may display some patches of varying hues.
Master Gardeners will be available to answer any questions you may have about your own gardening efforts or how to become a Master Gardener yourself. HCMGA is a nonprofit 501(c)3 incorporated association. Affiliated with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, its mission is to provide proven horticultural information to the public.
HCMGA hopes you will come out to enjoy the festival, have fun, learn about flowers, and delight in a day for the entire family.
