When the kindergarten students from Caledon East Public School cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the school’s new vegetable garden, the pint-sized pupils cheered.
“This is like magic for the kids,” said Rashmi Swarup, the Peel District School Board’s director of education, during a celebration event for the project at the school. “They will get to plant the seeds and watch them grow. I hope it plants a lifelong passion for growing food in the land.”

Peel District School Board officials and kindergarten students from Caledon East Public School came together on June 26 to celebrate the gardens in the schools project. With the students was Alvin Au, superintendent of education, Rashmi Swarup, director of education, Jaspal Gill, associate director and Trustee Stan Cameron.
