Starting A Vegetable Garden
Most veggies grow best in soil that is rich and easy to dig. The texture of the soil, influenced by clay, silt, and sand, determines drainage and the availability of nutrients to roots.
Locate a sunny spot that receives 6-8 hours of sunlight a day (less for leafy greens). Set aside space for paths so you can reach all parts of the garden without compacting the soil.

The Lake County Master Gardener Volunteers will be offering tips and guidance on vegetable gardening and keeping up with gardening as people age during a pair of programs at Morley Library.
“The Where, What, and When of Vegetable Gardening” will take place at 7 p.m. May 18.
As summer approaches, planning is key to having a productive vegetable garden. It includes choosing the right location, testing and amending the soil, selecting which vegetables to grow, and knowing when to start plants indoors from seed so you’ll be ready to move into the garden in the spring.
Master Gardener Volunteers will help attendees learn the ins and outs of improving how a garden grows.
Then, “Gardening As We Age” will be held 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 24.
Gardening can become more difficult as people get older, and the Master Gardener Volunteers will discuss what tools and techniques may help keep gardening within reach at any age.
Register for either or both classes at www.morleylibrary.org or call 440-352-3383. Morley Library is located at 184 Phelps St. in Painesville.
