Hydrangeas are a fairly easy plant to care for, provided you ensure they have the right condition and get enough water and fertiliser. However, they make a great option for “lazy gardeners” who don’t want to spend every day in the garden tending to their leafy friends.

An expert from Planting 101 said: “Are you tired of plants that require constant attention? Then you are a lazy gardener like me.

“That’s why I love hydrangeas, they are perennial flowering shrubs that practically grow on autopilot once established, producing gorgeous blooms year after year.

“But there is a catch. There are planting requirements that you need to get right otherwise you might not get the results you are hoping for.”

They explained that there is a major mistake gardeners make when planting hydrangeas which can transform these from the perfect plant for lazy gardeners to a plant which needs a lot of attention.

In a YouTube video, the expert explained that, while hydrangeas need sunlight, too much sun can make them hard work.

“Hydrangeas are shade-loving plants but there is a balance,” said the Planting 101 expert.

“While they don’t do well if it’s too sunny, they also won’t do well if there is too much shade. If you plant them where there is too much sun they will need more care.

“You really can’t be a lazy gardener if you plant your hydrangea in a spot with too much sun. That’s because you will need to water it more frequently.

“To get the best out of your hydrangeas aim to plant them in a location that gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

“Try to find a spot where your hydrangeas will get four to six hours of sun. Just remember, if you plant them in a super shady area they will not thrive and boom as well. “

How often should I water my hydrangea?

As well as the right amount of sunlight, you should also ensure your hydrangea is getting enough water. This is especially true in the summer when the hot and sunny dats go on for longer.

Typically, hydrangeas should be watered between once and three times a week. In hotter weather, they may need a little extra hydration.

Make sure you are watering your hydrangeas at the base of the plant, rather than showering the leaves and flowers.
