Whether your friend deserves congratulations or you just want to make them smile, flowers are always the way to go. But what if you can’t decide on just one?
Seeds for the perennial phlox are easy to grow in shade gardens or woodland meadows. Blooming from late summer to fall, they’re a favorite for gardeners and pollinators.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show may be over for another year, but with the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival just around the corner, there’s still plenty of gardening inspiration to be had this summer.
RHS Hampton will run from 4th-9th July 2023, and showcase ‘glorious gardens and fabulous flowers’ with garden displays, talks, demos, music, food & drink and opportunities to shop from small businesses.
With many UK households looking for new ways to save money, this year the RHS and BBC Morning Live have teamed up to bring a budget-friendly garden to the festival.
Designed by BBC Morning Live‘s resident gardener Mark Lane, the RHS and BBC Morning Live Budget Friendly Garden will show gardeners how they can use household goods and equipment for cost-effective gardening. These will include the use of cheap and readily-available drought tolerant plants, as well as recycled materials such as scaffold boards, plant pots and pallets.

Full of fruit, vegetables and edible flowers, including some that can be grown from food waste, the garden hopes to inspire those of all gardening abilities, and will demonstrate that you don’t need a large space to feed the family with homegrown produce.
‘We’re delighted to be partnering with BBC Morning Live on this garden to help highlight ways people can garden on a budget,’ says Helena Pettit, RHS director of gardens & shows. ‘Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive and there are lots of ways through plant propagation, reusing and recycling materials, and water conservation that means everyone can continue to garden and grow whilst also saving money.’
Ahead of the festival, Mark Lane has shared his top money-saving, gardening tips:
- Save money and make plant labels and a compost scoop from a plastic milk bottle.
- Rather than spending money on hormone rooting powder/gel, search your cupboards for honey and cinnamon.
- Make a drip-irrigation device for houseplants from a recycled plastic bottle, a cotton bud, a bamboo cane and an elastic band.
- Deter slugs by making your own organic spray from garlic.
- Grow tomatoes, strawberries and lettuce from leftovers found in the bottom of your fridge.
