LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On the way to work this morning you might be seeing frost blankets covering flowers from the freezing temperatures. The season change can make difficult to know when and what to plant  in your yard or garden. Frank Otte Nursery and Garden Center in Louisville shares some tips on how to make garden bloom. 

The nursery’s general manager, Jeremy Gruebbel, said he is ready for fall.

“I like the cold mornings. You know, the sun’s up, it’s going to be a high of mid-40s today. It’s perfect,” said  Gruebbel. 

You could say he knows a thing or two about plants and gardens.

“So I started working here when I was taking Gen Ed classes at UofL on the weekends and I was like, ‘Man this is kind of cool.’ and I ended up going to Morehead to study horticulture and I came back every weekend to work the entire time I was there. Been here ever since,” said Gruebbel. 

And he shares the best time to make additions to your garden.

“We always say fall is the best time to plant. Anything, it doesn’t matter what it is,” said Gruebbel. 

And although Kentucky has seen its first freeze, that won’t stop plants from growing.

“We had a freeze, plant them. Plant them now and the roots will keep going and come spring, you know, it’ll look like brand new,” said Gruebbel. 

And some plants like pansies even thrive in the cold.

“It’s a cold season flower. They are only pansies when it comes to the heat. You plant them now, they can tolerate a freeze, but once they get a deep freeze like we will in January, they’ll go dormant. They’ll look dead but leave them. The first warm week in spring, they pop right back up like nothing ever happened to them. It’s one of the very few cold flowers here in Louisville,” said Gruebbel. 

And now, with Halloween over, you will soon be seeing a special kind of tree at Frank Otte Nursery — Christmas trees.
