Benefits of Homesteading
Homesteading is a self-sufficient lifestyle that saves money and reduces environmental impact. It also encourages a deeper relationship with the land and your food.
It can be challenging to embrace this idea at first, but once you’re used to it, homesteading is an ideal way to live.
“Farm Sim for Grown Ups”, made by husband-and-wife team, launching V1 this Sunday – Veil of Dust is a survival/ farm sim that doesn’t prioritize good-vibes-only, is driven by thoughtful, long-form story-telling, and includes (optionally) challenging management mechanics.
Were you a childhood fan of Harvest Moon or Stardew valley who’s been looking around at the abundance of modern Farm Sim titles and wondering where the substance has gone? Are those ultra-cute graphics and friction-free storylines not doing it for you? Veil of Dust, which is releasing V1 today, aims to explore new territory for the genre and utilize it for long-format, mature storytelling and satisfying game play that hits the sweet spot between being a real management challenge and being taken at the player’s own pace.
The storylines, which are substantial – with the main arc being 56 cutscenes long and romance arcs being 27-30 cutscenes long, tackle subjects such as love, grief, purpose, and interpersonal dynamics in its historical setting of the 1860’s American Frontier.
Reviews on steam, which are currently 100% positive, have praised the story and character writing as well as the fresh, mature tone of the game:
“[…] The dialogue between characters is engaging, and somehow it can handle heavy topics in a light-hearted way without compromising on the seriousness of the subject. “
“[…] The character writing and relationships between those characters make for a compelling experience in hand with the story that they go through, from lore to events. I’m enjoying seeing things unfold as we go, as well as making sure these two siblings survive the rough hand they have been dealt.”
“I think this is a very cute and interesting take on the typical farming sim formula. The story and the characters, especially the siblings, is very good even when it’s bad. Siblings, y’know? The undercurrent of magic and danger is also really interesting and the romance for Laan was so sweet and then it destroyed me. […] “
“Played for almost 5 hours in one sitting, and did not want to put it down. Great take on an adult farming sim that is different from the many others that are out there. Love the survival theme. I can see myself putting a ton of hours into this game.”
This labor-of-love was created by a husband-and-wife team over the course of 3 years and the truly indie nature of the production shows – It’s not heavy on marketable, gimmicky mechanics or cool one-liners, but rather delivers a solid, earnest, and heartfelt experience that players are sure to connect with.
Players can find the V1 release on steam at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1593170/Veil_of_Dust_A_Homesteading_Game/ , which contains 7 story arcs and all major farming mechanics.
